Congratulations to The Mount Academy, 2017 Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon winners. The Mount Academy takes 1st & 2nd, Ichabod Crane is 3rd. The 2016 Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon took place Wednesday, April 26 at Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill, NY. Twenty-four teams from six counties in the Hudson Valley competed. The Mount Academy from Ulster County took the top two spots with Ichabod Crane High School (Columbia Co) claiming third. Rounding out the top five spots were two teams from Westchester County, Fox Lane High School (4th) and Ossining High School (5th). The point totals were extremely close behind first and second place with only one or two questions separating each team in the top 8!!! We had strong competition between great students and their environmental programs!!! The final scores can be seen below. The Mount Academy has now won the Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon for the last SEVEN years!
The Mount Academy, Ichabod Crane, Fox Lane (Bedford) and Warwick Valley high schools went on to the New York State Envirothon to represent their counties of Ulster, Columbia, Westchester and Orange. Mount Academy continued their 6-year winning streak and added a 7th straight win at the State Envirothon and will continue on to represent New York at the North American Envirothon in Washington D.C.
About the Envirothon
Five-member teams of high school students work together to compete on five environmental topics. They are tested on their knowledge of Soils, Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife, and Current Issues. They also give a 5-minute oral presentation on a problem solving scenario related to the year's current issue topic. The primary goal of the Envirothon is to learn about the natural environment we live in so as to become stewards of the land. In preparation for the event, students develop research skills, practice team building, and gain an appreciation for consensus decision making.
The Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon incorporates schools from ten counties including: Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, Sullivan, and Westchester. The Hudson Valley Regional Envirothon takes place yearly in April; this year at Taconic Retreat Center in Milan, NY. The highest scoring school from each county advances to the New York State Envirothon.
There is no cost to the students, parents, or schools to participate, outside of providing the necessary transportation to the event site.
